@smattymatty Thank you, really appreciate it!
@stefan besides most of cybersecurity twitter leaving when the CISO, privacy officer, and another head resigned, making that subject interesting on mastodon?
@stefan That article raises some good points — your LTL is probably very influential in who else you'll find and what content you'll be exposed to at first. Or even before you join, you can look at what's going on on an instance and decide if it's good for you (though I think that's kind of an advanced move). And I guess it's another reason why MaSoc's size is bad: there's just absolutely no way you'll be able to see anything useful in the whirlwind of posts on its LTL.
@phl Absolutely!
The Mastodon team acknowledges this as well:
@stefan I had no idea what this forkiverse was, but reading about it it looks like an excellent little idea that more communities could mimic — community cohesion is kind of a given, and people have the chance to explore so much more.
@phl Definitely! This makes so much sense, and The Forkiverse gives us a good blueprint on how to do this right.
Do we *really* have to go through this again?
"The hosts of one of my favourite tech podcasts, Hard Fork, had an idea: What if they built a new social media platform from scratch that could bring back some of that magic? They teamed up with the Search Engine Podcast to collaboratively launch “The Forkiverse.”"
"...they built a new social media platform from scratch..."
They did absolutely *nothing* of the sort
The #Forkiverse is nothing but a plain-jane, vanilla install of #Mastodon, currently running v4.5.5
I'm sorry...
...no, I'm not
This relentless promo play for what is nothing more that a couple New York Podcast Influencers has become too much
@FinchHaven @stefan I don’t think they ever claimed to have invented anything new. What they did is, they opened the concept of the Fediverse to a new audience. As a complete noob to the entire concept, I was intimidated to even try it. Exploring the decentralized web through the safety of #theforkiverse — a place where I automatically have the podcast in common with users — has opened my eyes to your world. Be kind to us, newcomers.
@Beta @FinchHaven @stefan I can confirm what Beta says. When I moved to the forkiverse server yesterday, I listened to the podcast in question for the first time. They were completely open about using mastodon and masto.host for a managed instance.
Yeah, I think the issue here is that the original article I linked to didn't do a good job explaining this, I've replaced it with a better one.
@Beta Yes, sorry, not to mean to speak for you, @FinchHaven, but I think some of us need to be a bit more forgiving. Correcting inaccuracies is okay, but it can definitely be done with more compassion, and assuming good intent.
Either way, welcome to the fediverse, Beta, I hope you're enjoying your stay!
@stefan @FinchHaven Thanks for the warm welcome!
I (and, I am sure, others!) know you guys don't mean to be impatient and that it must be funny/annoying to see literally thousands of ppl be like "wow, look at us, we discovered America" whilst the brave Fediverse folks have been exploring this new frontier for a while.
I think those of us who finally came here are just really proud of ourselves for trying something new and are super happy this exists!
@Beta My pleasure!
I do believe folks here mostly mean well, and may not always realize they come across defensive/patronizing/gate-keepy. We're all good people here who care, deeply, each in our own way!
Really appreciate your attitude and understanding!
@FinchHaven Yeah, this was just a random article I found to give people who might not have been following along some context. Let me see if I can find something better.
