This afternoon, I took advantage of the rain to tidy up and clean my desk, as well as part of the cabinet to my right, which houses the switch and the Raspberry Pi 4 (powered by FreeBSD) that I use for various services.

I came across my old laptop again: a 2019 16" MacBook Pro, the last Intel model. I think it was one of the worst devices I’ve ever owned: sluggish, fans always loud, and the case 'polished' down quickly just from my hands. I used it for about a year, then passed it to my wife when I got the M1 Pro MBP - which I’m still using - in early 2022. By comparison, the Apple Silicon model feels brand new, even after four years of fairly intense use.

My wife had to stop using the 'old' one because the battery, despite having very few charge cycles, is practically dead. It doesn’t hold a charge, but that wouldn’t even be the biggest issue. The real trouble is that without a functional battery, it has become incredibly slow, with the fans constantly blasting, making it unusable. I tried turning it on again, but it even struggles to launch the macOS installer. I’m stuck: replacing the battery would cost 289 euros (from what I’ve read, the entire top case needs to be replaced), but I hate to leave it like this, as the hardware and screen still have a lot to offer.

I’ve thought about selling it as-is, but I think it would be difficult - an inexperienced buyer wouldn't understand that the slowness is caused specifically by the battery issue.

Any advice?

@stefano The reason Apple Stores will replace the top case is that the battery is glued to the top case in those models. If one of the batteries (it’s got more than one) is damaged why trying to separate them it could result in a thermal runaway.
Ifixit has a guide showing how to do it: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Pro+16-Inch+2019+Battery+Replacement/135185

About the fans: I had the same model and my wife too is using it these days. I didn‘t have a problem with the fans being excessively loud. Unless I did CPU or GPU intensive tasks.

@RecoveredExpert the fans are probably loud because of the depleted battery.

@stefano I don't know about replacing the top case, but at the store where I buy batteries, the average price of a MacBook battery is around 50 euros. I would need to know the model number to be more specific (I'm not very knowledgeable about Apple products). In any case, I believe it's forbidden to send lithium batteries by mail except via land transport.

@stefano If you’re thinking about donating it for someone else to refurbish, that’s a great option. Another possibility, if you keep it plugged in, is donating its CPU power to scientific research.

BOINC (Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing):
https://boinc.berkeley.edu/projects.php

It lets unused computers donate CPU, and sometimes GPU, time to real scientific projects.

@NickBergenComputerQuest Unfortunately, it’s almost unusable. This computer, when the battery isn’t working properly, throttles the performance, making it unusable.

@stefano Oh, well then battery replacement is probably the only answer to giving it more use. Sending it out for someone to refurbish would probably work best.

@stefano Turn it into a piece of art deco or use some components for DIY stuff: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=WLP_L7Mgz6M

Alternatively, wait for the right moment in life and relieve some stress with the good ole Asus Repair Kit.

@stefano Whenever I've needed to sell laptops or other hardware, I've always used subito(dot)it and gotten very good deals. No shipping, only manual delivery in my city. I always encountered good buyers, sometimes power users and sometimes not. I always explained any hardware problems or glitches, and no one ever complained.

@raffaele That's a good idea. I've never used Subito, but this could be the first time. Thanks for the hint!

@stefano If you want to donate it away, I know a group taking in old laptops and putting open source on them, and giving them away.

But you'd have to ship it to the USA.

@dvl thank you, Dan. This could be one possibility I'll consider.
