NatureMapr is closing down, so I’m going to have to start using something else to record sightings. I’m using Merlin Bird ID already, but I also want to ID insects and lizards and plants. Should I use iNaturalist, or something else? Mostly I see things in #Canberra but also sometimes elsewhere in NSW.

#lepidoptera #lizard #florespondence #birds

@emmadavidson Another vote for iNaturalist.

Does a good job of guessing the ID initially, and has a large user base. Also affiliated (hosted?) by ALA in Australia.

@emmadavidson I use iNaturalist and it's companion app Seek and find them quite good. It allows you to modify the GPS coordinates or make them fuzzy so you can't be tracked and it all informs actual science too.

@bananamangodog fuzzy GPS would be good protection if I ever manage to find a real small ant-blue butterfly (Acrodipsas myrmecophila). Critically endangered and fascinating species. I have an accurate tattoo on my wrist to compare with if I ever need to ID a sighting.

@emmadavidson well that's just perfect! I hope you find an Acrodipsas myrmecophila and a good app to document it 😉

@emmadavidson I use iNaturalist, would recommend giving it a try, though I find the interface a little bit clunky.
