a little update for anyone not paying attention to https://theforkiverse.com #theforkiverse, it just hit 9k users within this month, making it one of the most active servers in the fediverse
Post
look like it currently has slightly higher MAU's then mastodon.online, hachyderm.io and fosstodon.org
anyone know why the #PeerTube instance https://phijkchu.com is listed as having 146,974 users? I think this must be someone tweaking their numbers right?
@ricci seeing your data you also have this instance loaded, so I assume you are just trusting whatever the /nodeinfo is reporting even if thats made up data?
@ricci oh also https://paper.wf/read is listed as having 105315 users but there is absolutely no way that is anywhere near true. looking at the recent posts there are only a handful posted perday but it lists 9130 MAU which seems impossible
Yes? The Fediverse is an active community. The key to an active community is lively interaction. This is different from X and Co, where the only thing that matters is having as many registered users as possible for statistical purposes, and that seems to be your goal as well.
Instead of looking to increase the number of active users, you are interested in the number of registered accounts. You have 9,000 users and 6,000 posts on this instance. That means 3,000 users haven't written anything at all and 6,000 have only written an introductory post. That's pretty much the epitome of an inactive community.
If we assume that each of the active members has written 20 posts, you have 300 active members and 8,700 members who show no participation at all. Just take a look at the daily activity in terms of user numbers and post numbers.
Instead of ramping up registrations, you should try to motivate the inactive people to participate actively—97% of your members are inactive.
@liaizon that's correct, I'm trusting nodeinfo. I did look a little at this one instance because yeah it's surprising. But it didn't show any obvious tells like a suspiciously stable (hard coded) value, I don't see anything in the peertube code to override user counts, etc. so I just kept it. Certainly possible they've made custom modifications to tweak numbers or some shenanigans with bots but I have no concrete reason to distrust it
@liaizon you can click on the "raw data" link under the Fediverse on https://arewedecentralizedyet.online/ to compare (I should probably make a more easily linkable version...)
@liaizon@wake.st imagine being on a server ran by a guy that looks like this
@mook there are other reasons to care about how different servers run and operate, thats the power of federation. I don't want to be on their server at all. I want to be able to follow and interact with a wide demographic of different people and there is currently a totally new demographic of people coming into this place because of this server
