Might be an intersting read @pj @Casey @kevin

How the Financial Times decided to host a Mastodon server - and then decided not to any more.

We tried to run a social media site and it was awful

For what it's worth, I am enjoying this while it's lasting. Thanks again

This is interesting, although it seems most of the headaches are speculative and legal, probably further complicated by it being a large media organisation like the FT

I think for #theforkiverse the actual hosting is third party and the costs (only?) a #searchengine thing, in independant media land.

We will have the server storage issue though. I for one would be happy to have old posts, and old media especially got auto deleted, which i think masto.host supports.

@zoneghost would you not avoid most of their issues by owning an instance for your own accounts but don't let anyone join. It's just essentially a verified badge.

Flipboard.social, I'm pretty sure is just official sources or their own journalists. The Netherlands has their official government offices' accounts on their own instance as well.

You don't need users in your instance to host and let others follow. Then you avoid costs from server storage, accountability for what your users say, etc

@zoneghost This is a very well behaved group but I do think there is a risk. With all the moderators based in the US, it gives a bad actor a chance to post some nasty stuff overnight while all the moderators are sleeping. Eventually, I think they will need a few additional moderators around the world who can jump in anytime if needed.

@zoneghost Largely agree. The legal worries are particularly acute here in Britain where it is much easier to sue someone for libel/defamation.

On storage, do any other Mastodon servers have users contrbuting to the costs?

@beansandzines yeah i think a lot do. Things like gitub sponsors and such. I think more voluntary donations than subscriptions generally.
