Asking again: does anyone who edits Wikipedia want to glance over and hit publish on this Blacksky draft?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Blacksky

EDIT!! it's live now thanks to @Szescstopni

And thanks to everyone in the #Fediverse who contributed to this page!! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blacksky

(now not only is Blacksky, the social media project represented, it's also knocked Blacksky, the US military contractor, out of being the only Blacksky on Wikipedia)

#Fediverse users worked together to make sure #Blacksky has a #Wikipedia page, arising from the need to educate users here about the project, starting in about September last year (https://assemblag.es/@inquiline/115166596826618536 )

I was sort of trying to cheerlead but you-all are who actually built the page! 🙏 ❤️

thanks to @Anne_Delong https://musician.social/@Anne_Delong/115321834133067505 among others.

It's ironic that this page went live right as people are breaking their bridged connections to Bluesky because of ICE getting verified there +

Technical details are largely above my paygrade, but it's interesting that also today, Blacksky is running an appview of its own, per @mcc (linking out to Blacksky's Rudy Frasier)
https://mastodon.social/@mcc/115917963359245981

Maybe there will be a way to stay bridged to Blacksky while remaining (ahem) defederated from Bluesky, from instances over here?

(mcc's 🧵 gives some back story here, and it [the thread not the story] begins in... September of last year)

update: i posted the page yesterday on Bluesky (tho my account is hosted by Blacksky) and as of today, some folks there are contributing edits to the page too.

So I guess this wound up being an ActivityPub-ATProto collaboration through the Wikipedia protocol?? 😃

(don't @ me, i'm a social scientist, not a computer toucher 😂 )

@Szescstopni

by this definition i think we'd both agree #asstodon is a protocol--and we'd be right

@inquiline Things Fediverse users/operators can do include:

- You could bridgyfed with blacksky PDS but not with the bluesky PDSes;

- You could choose to allow bridging based on who the blacksky moderation service allows, not bluesky;

Things you can't do:

- Know someone's PDS from looking at their address— you gotta query a database to know

- Know what Appview a user is using. Nothing tracks that information and AFAIK no one can.

My PDS is neither blacksky or bluesky, I self host.

@inquiline A "PDS" is where your posts are stored. But other users don't read your posts off the PDS— "reading" a PDS means looking at a lot of raw JSON.

An "appview" is kind of like a super-client. It serves the web pages when you want to read other people's posts, but it also handles search and some other stuff a Mastodon instance would handle.

Awesome, thank you!! (I wasn't trying to tag you to make you answer questions, but to be courteous about letting you know I was sharing your post--nonetheless I, and surely many others reading, will super appreciate this info!!!)

edit, I just bookmarked your post bc I know a lot of people will find it helpful/I will want to be sharing it often

Welcome @CathyBikesBook ! Blacksky is very interesting indeed. Here's an article I did on it last fall https://privacy.thenexus.today/what-solidarity-looks-like/

And, hanks for the tag @inquiline .

@thenexusofprivacy this is really cool, I didn't know the Blacksky community had got a relay running which (if I understand correctly) is the most challenging part/ the bit people said would stop decentralisation?

@JessFairbairn glad you like it! Blacksky's relay has indeed been running for quite a while ... but it turns out that this wasn't actually the most challenging part. They've just started public testing of their appview (at https://staging.blacksky.community/ ) which has taken them a lot longer to do. I haven't tracked development closely, but one challenge is the size of the data -- Rudy says a while ago that they need 14TB of disk!
