1) There is a table with suggested interval times based on your current 10k time. I have the German edition of the book; it's excellent in my (non-expert) opinion & includes training plans adaptable to the number of days per week you want to run.
2) I think it works better for solo training, since everyone has an individual goal pace. But maybe that's not an issue... I don't know how groups train.
