This. I'm white and disabled. Not the same space, but a similar one. It's easier to deal with the devil in the light than the devil in the dark.

In the case of my ex, I hadn't known I'd married a racist because we were privileged to live where the racism was not in view. MAGA 1.0 was when I learned. It was the motivating factor in my decision to end the marriage.

I can't really describe this well, but it's also part of why I'm not in any hurry to haul my #transgender ass out of #Texas. Because I know how to survive here, where the bigotry is overt.

It's like the difference between concealed carry and open carry. In #TX, people openly carry their #transphobia and #homophobia. I don't know how to live where this bigotry is concealed carry.

@mekkaokereke this is a fantastic point. I’ve had lots of conversations lately about Minneapolis.

Minneapolis has been on the map for quite some time. This is not new or shocking in any way. Some percentage of the country have wanted this for many years.

The timeline became certain once he got a second term—it was only a question of how quickly we would get around to it.

A society won’t properly adjudicate fascism (or racism) until they are in its face.

This isn’t “sunlight being the best antiseptic”, because anyone with eyes could have seen any of these signs, but they had to be looking—and cared to look.

Unfortunately, it has to hurt people for them to realize. It was always going to get a lot worse before it could ever get better.

@mekkaokereke @acdha I totally agree trump didn’t change opinions. But I do think there isn’t really anyone else who could get away with what he is getting away with. (I don’t know enough about 1930s Germany to have an opinion about hitler there.)

It’s relevant because trump is so old. If he dies, or becomes incapacitated, I don’t think there’s anyone who can step in and maintain the spell. Vance certainly can’t.

Of course that doesn’t mean we go back to “normal”. The only way out of this is redoing our constitution, after who-knows-how-many years of authoritarianism. But the sooner we can start, the better. (Although one could certainly argue we need to hit a little more rock bottom to really admit how badly off we are. Schumer and Jeffries and Newsom are clearly not yet convinced. They’d clearly vote for more of the same.)

Yep. That is what I learned from the first Trump election. He gives them permission to be and do what they want so long as they keep him in power.

@mekkaokereke @acdha I believe you mean white people *in the US* (I don't mean this as a correction, but rather as a contextualization).

Anyway, out of the US, many people see the current situation as "What they have been doing for decades to the rest of the world and to their non-white people, now they are doing it also to their white people, and all of a sudden, the media notice it". Basically, Trump is exactly the same as his predecessors, but he's not socially acceptable.

In fact, my personal worry (and expectation) is that, as soon as the next president is elected, the hypocrisy mask will go up again, and all will go back to BAU, with our governments bending over backwards to accommodate American demands and privileges while singing their praises.
