Picture of Bobby Sands on the right Bobby Sands was a member of the IRA who, in 1981, led a hunger strike with nine other prisoners in Maze Prison to demand recognition as political prisoners and to protest harsh prison conditions. He died of starvation on May 5, 1981, after 66 days on hunger strike in Maze Prison.
