This is an excellent post by @funbreaker about why Matrix is unsuitable as a communications tool.

@Edent @funbreaker

I've personally not had this issue, but the on-boarding was so bad it was hard to find any active rooms at all.

The rooms I'm in seem nice enough but overall I'm not impressed and it seems like the admin and user tools around safety are badly lacking.

I'm not sure what the benefit is over say an IRC server.

@Edent @funbreaker looks like quite FUD.

There were abuse attacks in big public rooms sometime last year, but the anti-abuse tools have become much better and I haven't seen anything but few random spam DM's for months.

Perhaps the rooms in question are not moderated well and/or not protected by anti-abuse bot. Spam & abuse exist, but they are no longer a big problem like year ago.

For example Meowlnir is a great tool:

@cos @funbreaker
No, it isn't FUD. It is my literal experience of using Matrix.
Even "a few" random spam DMs is more than I get on other messaging tools.

@Edent @funbreaker do the rooms suffering this have anti-abuse bots that follow public ban lists? If not, better use them.

Also, what would be the correct way to handle abusive servers on federated network? I don't see other way that blocking servers that allow spam accounts and ban individual users as soon as possible. All this applies also to Mastodon an any federated services.

@cos Ah, victim blaming is it? Nice!

I don't seem to get any spam, abuse, or hate messages on Mastodon. I only got them on Matrix.

Face it, Matrix is a dead-end. Its apps don't work properly, moderation is a half-baked afterthought, and their usability is poor even for seasoned geeks like me.

No need to reply, thanks.
