#OnThisDay, 12 Jan 1932, Hattie Wyatt Caraway wins a special US Senate election to become the first woman elected to the Senate. She won 92% of the vote.

She was a Southern Democrat. Though she was progressive on women’s rights, she voted against anti-lynching laws that could have protected Black people.
