A woodpecker clings to the ribbed, reddish-brown bark of a bald cypress tree with its long claws and big feet, seen through its small twigs and branches. It is mostly a pale gray, with black wings with thin white bands across them. It has a small reddish orange spot above its bill, and a larger, darker spot on the back of its head. It has a long, slightly curved black beak. A small bit of red can be seen low on its belly
