A certain pond in the Harz mountains is said to be inhabited by the Devil himself - and he uses rather unusual methods in order to keep trespassers away.

Red-bellied woodpecker on a bald cypress

#birds #birding #swamp #louisiana

A woodpecker clings to the ribbed, reddish-brown bark of a bald cypress tree with its long claws and big feet, seen through its small twigs and branches. It is mostly a pale gray, with black wings with thin white bands across them. It has a small reddish orange spot above its bill, and a larger, darker spot on the back of its head. It has a long, slightly curved black beak. A small bit of red can be seen low on its belly

#SilentSunday #alligator #swamp #louisiana

A young alligator rests on a wet, rotted log laying down in a swamp. The gator is probably four or five feet long, with a dark blackish green body and a long, black and white banded tail. It is partially covered by the small green leaves of duckweed and a couple of brown leaves; the same duckweed can be seen floating all around the log on the surface of the dark water
