In 2025 the central Mediterrenean
remained one of the deadliest borders
in the world. In the last 12 months at
least 1,184 people have died or are
missing while attempting to cross the
sea between Libya, Tunisia and Italy.
Libyan actors have increased their
presence not only in front of the
Libyan coast but also in international
waters, and at least 25,286 people
have been violently intercepted and
returned to Libyan detention centers,
where torture, sexual violence and
slavery is still rife.
