Microsoft Office renamed to "Microsoft 365 Copilot app"
Microsoft Office renamed to "Microsoft 365 Copilot app"
@jbz holy fuck, i thought you were shitposting!
@jbz I made a prediction some years ago (in the context of Meta, Alphabet, X etc.) that Microsoft will eventually call itself 365 in the future. It hasn't become more unlikely since. Maybe even "1" 🤷
@jbz holy shit I thought you were joking. They've cashed in and binned 30+ years of brand identity and familiarity to sell copilot. That's bonkers
@jamesravey @jbz Copilot is just a shiny layer on top of ChatGPT (quite literally). Microsoft has already committed to paying OpenAI $13 billion and their ownership stake in OpenAI is estimated to be worth $135 billion. I think that they just really *REALLY* want to make Copilot work out for them.
@joe @jamesravey they can also claim Office profits as AI profits, sidestepping the annoying problem of Copilot bleeding money all across MS products.
@jbz @jamesravey Most of their Office profits comes from subscriptions and as of January 16 of last year, Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscriptions worldwide include Copilot. (They just increased the price to cover their extra costs). I have read a lot of speculative reporting that the $20/mo isn't enough to cover the costs for the service, though.
It's possible that they see that they're losing money per user, so they are trying to make up for it by increasing the number of users? 🤷♂️
@joe @jbz @jamesravey to add for precision's sake, there was a way to opt out of the "upgrade" and keep old subscription without AI. Not sure if that's possible for new subscribers tho.
@b00g13 @joe @jamesravey 2021 ends in october, 2024 has some AI features but not like the current shiny copilot edition.
