Started some cuttings of correa, hakea (or maybe it’s an acacia?), crowea, silver banksia, and indigo (I think?) on the balcony to add to the guerilla gardening stash. Hoping that in two or three months, they’ll be ready to plant out in reserves and green strips, where they’ll provide food for local birds and insects.

@emmadavidson aren't acacias the fuckin evil weed in Vic that VicForrests (allegedly, of course) uses/used to do all the "rewilding" after cutting down old growth mature forests?
@otte_homan @emmadavidson Not an expert by any means, but my understanding is that acacia=wattle, and there are more than 1000 species. Some may be undesirable outside their local habitat, but plenty are just fine. I bought some tube stock from the local botanic gardens (they know their shit) and added them to the wild specimens along the border of my block.

Could you send a couple of pics of your cuttings. Did you just stick them in a pot of soil ?
What part of the parent plant do you take the cuttings from ?
@Godfrey642 I took the cuttings from parts of the parent plant where they were getting a bit leggy. The parent plants are also in green strip areas in my suburb and look healthy, so hopefully my cuttings will produce plants well suited to their intended location. All I do is trim off the leaves from the bottom two thirds of the cutting, stick in potting mix, and water. If it wasn’t summer, I’d have them in a little green house til they establish roots (8 weeks) but I’m hoping it’s warm enough.

I bought a packet of mixed Aus Wild Flowers from Bunnings (!) as I hoped to grow them and transplant to a 30cm wide strip that runs along a cycle path opposite our house. No one single seed sprouted !!! Im usually v good with seeds. Must've been a dud packet.
@Godfrey642 I have very mixed success with my gardening efforts, but it's fun to try, and no harm done if a cutting doesn't root.

I have completely revised how I see plants after reading "Braiding Sweetgrass" by Robin Wall Kimmerer.
She's a biologist, PhD, native American who draws on her heritage and people when she works with plants.
I cannot recommend it highly enough. Its the kind of book you can read just a chapter at a time. So much wisdom. You need to let each chapter/ theme settle. I got my copy through Readings in Melbourne.
