Apparently someone can't say "Linux" without getting a lecture about "No, it's GNU/Linux, you stupid!"

And people wonder why Linux is only at ~5% market share on Desktop...

It's all about how welcome you feel: If you feel like you've just "invaded" someone's "holy place", then this doesn't feel so welcome, does it!?

@janriemer

Well, as far as I can see, only those who support free software philosophy call the OS as GNU/Linux.

Open source and open core supporters will always call the OS as Linux.

As for me, I am a heavy Windows and Excel user.

@restorante That's different to what I can see, then. As far as I can see only reply guys call it GNU/Linux (and blog posts for beginners that want to be accurate with the terminology for those that don't know about it yet).

Still, most people that defend free software over open core and such, and that prefer GPL over any weak license, call it Linux. It just mean Linux-based.

@janriemer oof, yeah, I saw that thread. Unironically dropping a "what you're actually referring to is called GNU/Linux" is just cringe at this point.

I thought that meme stomped it out of people by now, but I guess there's always that one guy. blobcatfacepalm2

@janriemer well... conversation has derived to "I say only Linux! Blah blah blah"
I guess there are holy places everywhere Xd
I'm one of those saying GNU/Linux , I think it's more descriptive of a system.
If I hear only #Linux I think about #android or even #postmarketos ...
If I hear #GNU/Linux I think about #debian etc.
But ecosystem is rich enough! I love more to hear about #gnu / #linuxlibre or #gnuhurd...
But hey! I dont care how you say it!
Holy places and criticism everywhere, true.

@ianthetechie ...and soon to be uutils/Rust/Linux 😜

Yes, in general, language is very important, but in this instance it is pretty ridiculous and I don't take it too seriously.

But makes me very happy that so many people have chimed in with encouraging words.🫂 Thank you for the validation. 🙂

@janriemer yeah lol like everyone knows what you meant… and while I can sorta understand the reason for the pedantry, his particular argument that someone might misunderstand Torvalds wrote the whole OS himself is just downright silly 😂

@ianthetechie @janriemer 👍

And what would be left for the die-hard GNU folks if there wasn't Torvald's Linux kernel they now could profit from in the first place? Hurd?🙈

The guy in the thread used terms like "the proletariat"... Imo this must be some kind of shitposting or trolling, combining class fight rhetorics with software freedom.

Anyway, this whole debate is so absurd. Glad I jumped ship off to BSD.🤷‍♀️

I saw that thread.

I think it's the first time I saw someone unironically play the “it's GNU/Linux actually” card in over 20 years.

It didn't make sense 20 years ago (we also had X, KDE, etc) and it sure as hell doesn't make sense now (we also have CUPS, PipeWire, LibreOffice, etc).

It's also not the impression I generally get from the Linux community. There are so much friendly and helpful people.

Oftentimes these very few negative voices suffocate all the thousand positive ones. At least that's what it _feels_ like in the moment.
