Had a blast representing #postmarketOS today at the Open Source Conference Tokyo Fall edition. #osc2025tk
While I was I alone at the booth, I had a good time esp with the folks from #tlug #rockylinux #homeassistant
Today i took part of #linuxday2025 in Palermo,
I talked about the risks for Android ROMs related to AOSP and how #LinuxMobile and @postmarketOS might be a way forward, together with our communities.
Shout out to @thefreecircle for the great organization and the ambitious and very lively event!
Camera support on Fairphone 4 with postmarketOS is coming to you very soon!
All 3 cameras are supported, main rear camera, ultra-wide camera and front camera.
And all with a completely open source software stack of course!

# Mobian brings Debian 13 'Trixie' to phones and tablets
@lproven takes a detailed look at not just Mobian, but other Linux first OSs for phones and other devices.
Well worth reading.
(I run Mobian on my PinePhone Pro; sadly, the hardware lets it down.)
Spent a little time last night and this morning trying to build #PostmarketOS on #Aeon via #distrobox with no luck. It doesn't love the sudo/mount/chroot hurdles. I think I'm going to have to boot some distro via USB for this particular journey. 🤔📱♻️
Some big news regarding mobile OSes:
First, Graphene OS has confirmed a partnership with a large OEM to bring support to non-Pixel devices (Snapdragon SoC):
https://piunikaweb.com/2025/10/13/grapheneos-ending-pixel-exclusivity-new-oem/
This is good news, but IMHO it only delays the unavoidable demise of free AOSP-based projects since Google is now finally pulling the rug.
Second, the FSF announced Librephone, an initiative to bring real freedom to mobile devices:
https://www.fsf.org/news/librephone-project
This is also good, but it must be taken in the right perspective: Librephone, as far as I understand it, is not a new mobile OS, but rather an initiative to open-source existing proprietary firmware blobs. AOSP-based open source OSes like Lineage, Graphene, and even /e/OS, will hopefully benefit from this initiative, by being able to replace binary blobs with open-source firmware. But they still remain AOSP-based solutions, and therefore bound to the Google ecosystem.
There are two problems here that really need to be addressed.
The first one is political. Legislators and citizens must come to acknowledge that a democratic society where the full mobile ecosystem is in the hands of a corporate duopoly is not acceptable.
The second one is technological: AOSP is not a fully free OS, it's a trojan horse, a trap set by Google years ago that is springing right now. We need to move away from Android and embrace full GNU/Linux solutions, or even something completely new, at this point I don't even care. I've heard good opinions of Postmarket OS. Any feedbacks here?
Say what you want about Richard Stallman, but he saw this coming.

Free the last bits of "anything Android"?
My positive thought about this is that #PostmarketOS and #MobileLinux in general will profit from any public knowledge about hardware it could run on.
If I understood correctly the money for doing the work on the #Android blobs is donated by John Gilmore. His Money, his decision where to put it. And there is a positive effect, but there is also a negative one:
Android is based on ideas by #Google. To free it we'd need to fork it and adopt it to different ideals and goals. Android is designed to maximize the profit of Google.
It is not designed with the users well-being and interests as the primary goal.
Just replacing blobs in Android keeps the ecosystem the same, promotes Google and their goals and leaves the control over design decisions for Android in Googles hands.
Once a device is freed by hard work of a few engineers it will be old, it will be uninteresting for people looking at Android and the latest shiny hardware running it.
But still - Mobile Linux will make good use of those devices as free OSes in general do when it comes to hardware left behind by commercial OSes.
Dear @Mer__edith and the the amazing @signalapp team,
After the last update, the Signal "desktop app" is requiring us to launch the mobile app - however, many of us do not have the Android or any other "mobile" version of the Signal app any more.
We are a large (by our standards) group of #Linux phone users, and your "desktop" app is our "mobile" app : )
Our previous phones on which #SignalApp was initially activated was an Android or Apple device and we have since then completely migrated to #Linuxphones. Some of us may have registered Signal on #signalcli, Flare, #Molly, Signal Android in #WayDroid, etc.
The #mobileLinux community is growing - we have members spanning a good number of projects and devices, e.g.
- @purism #Librem5 and #LibertyPhone running #Debian-based #PureOS #GnuLinux, #Alpine-based #PostmarketOS or #Mobian,
- @PINE64 #Pinephone and PP Pro running #ManjaroARM, #SailfishOS, etc.
- @furilabs #FLX1 running #Droidian-based #FuriOS,
- a wide variety of Android phones (including OnePlus 6, Google Pixel 3, #Fairphone 4 & 5) running #Alpine-based @postmarketOS ,
- @volla , #Fxtec and #Brax3 devices running #UbuntuTouch by @ubports,
- devices running @mobian which is part of #Debian project, etc.
[Apologies to any project I may have failed to include - you are all appreciated]

Here's the rubbish photo I took to test the camera app in postmarketOS running on a OnePlus 6T. The hardware is definitely capable of better. Reminded me of the early days of analogue colour photography. Not to be mean about PMOS, as I expect that in time it will get much better, although perhaps too slowly to be much use to this old phone.
On the upside, logging on to Mastodon via Firefox has been as easy as it should be.
I've been wanting to try out postmarketOS on my old phone (a OnePlus 6T) for a while now, but kept putting it off because I expected it would require a lot of time and fiddling. It didn't! Breakfast experiment was to flash PMOS, using the UBports installer. This was very quick and easy, although turned out not to be the best way to do it. (1/n)
