Buzludzha is a communist monument set on a peak in the Balkan Mountains of Bulgaria. Its name comes from the Turkish word for 'icy'. Very appropriate, I thought, as I scaled the snow-covered mountain in -15 degrees!
The structure is a striking example of Brutalist design. A circular hall sits beneath a vast dome, a hammer and sickle at its centre. Mosaics made from cobalt glass line the interior, depicting party history.
