#ThoughtProvoker blobhyperthink

Compare #FreeSoftware activists who refuse to join and use proprietary platforms and tools on sheer principle, not even to try to rescue fellow #FOSS afficionados who are captured there, suffering #FOMO or just misguided.

To the North-Korean liberation movement, refusing to rescue dissidents, on sheer principle, because Kim-Jong Un is still in proprietary power. Instead they build a big fat signpost at the border, saying "Come here, it is the better choice!"

@smallcircles I did everything right: I used my real details and I did it from a library computer. Somehow Facebook was on to me and permanently disabled my account within 2 days.

I've heard from other activists (outside of free software) that they're often targeted, too. Not even controversial ones: think local welfare or recycling advocates. Really.

@smallcircles

Unfortunately, it's not that easy.

I tried to create an account to mirror @missionlibre 's account on Insta. I thought doing so would was a reasonable compromise, so long as I made sure I did it on borrowed computers, used a script to actually post and made sure I was absolutely clear I hated Insta.

But Meta wasn't having it one bit. I had to start by making my first-ever personal Facebook account and Facebook just wouldn't let me.

@smallcircles What I have found is that you can't rescue anyone from proprietary software. You can only give them information and hope they make better choices. Proprietary software is often addictive, so there are all of the same kinds of problems as with any other addiction.
