Is matching the stripes or other pattern resisting you? Try pulling a ladder stitch!
You just sew from one pattern edge to another and then tighten the thread. Magic! Sew on properly afterwards once the patterns are matched!

A short six second clip of exactly that. A shoulder dart has had the dart outlined in pink basting thread, and then between each edge of the dart the sewing needle has been brought up or down through the matching points, so that when the zigzag shaped thread is pulled to a straight line, the edges meet perfectly where the needle entered or exited. The horizontal stripes of the flannel now meet. Poorly lit and cluttered, but a demonstrative clip.
