Wow, if you search for signal messenger on DuckDuckGo using Chrome, the actual @signalapp web site is the *third* entry following ads for “Signal Private Messenger – Free Download” that leads to the site appmaus.com and “Get Signal Messenger | Install Signal App” that leads to the site filelocations.com.

DuckDuckGo should be held criminally liable for anyone who ends up downloading malware because of this.

@aral @signalapp @Mer__edith this is why blocking ads is so important.
Also using a search engine not financed by ads could help

It's okay on Vivaldi.

@aral @signalapp @Mer__edith DDG in Android Firefox, UK, safe search, no AI, uBlockOrigin, ADVERTS OFF, then my first link is to https://signal org.

You won't see adverts if you turn them off in DDG settings. Of course they are a source of income for DDG.

Yes, something’s not right over at DDG. I was trying to find a small regional hobby store website and even though I typed in the exact name, I got multiple lines of ads then multiple lines of unrelated big corporate stores. The one that I was looking for was at the very bottom of the page.

@aral @signalapp @Mer__edith An excellent reminder that an effective ad blocker is as important as effective AV software (if not more so)

@aral @signalapp @Mer__edith the ads are not managed by DDG, but instead by Microsoft (Bing).
You can disable ads in DDG settings, you don't even need an ad blocker.

@aral @signalapp @Mer__edith fwiw ddg sources much of its index from Bing: https://duckduckgo.com/duckduckgo-help-pages/results/sources#:~:text=which%20we%20largely%20source%20from%20Bing

This is what is shown on the Startpage search engine when one searches for Signal. But be aware that this Chromium-based browser, with additional privacy and security features, has a system-wide secure DNS filter. 💡
