Unpopular opinion: the silver lining in server outages is that they pull the curtain & reveal some hard truths about who is really behind some services we use... especially stuff we think are alternatives to Big Tech (spoiler: maybe they aren't).
Case in point: last year's #Microsoft outage took out #DuckDuckGo (https://mashable.com/article/microsoft-outage-affects-bing-copilot-duckduckgo-chatgpt).
Today's Amazon's AWS outage took out #Signal in some areas: https://mastodon.world/@Mer__edith/115405436746725236
Oh my, is this time to convince my family & friends to move to Matrix? 🥲

I'm a techie. I recently tried Matrix. I find it so clunky. Non-techies will hate it and abandon it. I'll keep pushing Signal to family and friends.

like this is literally the next screen. I have not yet gotten to my goddamn search results. I press "Don't turn on".
Toast says, mumble mumble something "to turn personalisation on, just do bla blah.."
It's like El Goog is slinking away resentfully.
Remember when computers were tools and not some kind of shifty scammy robot?
this concludes pospi's 5am commentary on sleepily using the "!g" feature of #duckduckgo to find the bass set from the artist with the weird 13375p33k name that confused the 'lesser' search engine
With #DuckDuckGo being #enshittified, I just randomly decided to see if some ancient search engines are still alive. Sure enough, there are a few throwback engines still going strong.
#Lycos: Alive and well! I don't see much enshittification, it's clean.
#Dogpile: Also seems clean and functional
#Excite: Clean, but has ads in the results.

Does anyone know how Duckduckgo (or google for that matter) get the summaries that accompany wikipedia articles when they show up in search results? There seem to be hallucinated rape allegations against a person in said summaries, but I don't know if it's hallucinated by AI, a random wikipedia editor, or something else.
(Specifically, what I think the AI/editor is getting wrong is that this person made rape allegations against someone else. She was not the subject of them.)
Both with DDG and Google it can happen that the "wrong version" (e.g. blatant vandalism) gets cached in the previews or other snippets and served to users even long after being removed from the actual article. Search in the history (https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:History), optionally with a tool (like https://wikipedia.ramselehof.de/wikiblame.php ), to check where the text came from.
About time a search engine did this.
Picture research is time-consuming enough without also having to trawl through page after tedious page of false, redundant, pointless imagery claiming to be something it isn't.

Yeah it's annoying that #DuckDuckGo is sticking AI junk into its search results, but I'm glad to see it's well-versed in the history of our founder, John Mastodon.
Reminder that using noai.duckduckgo.com is a better choice.
