As expected, on some well known news sites my latest blog post also drew some interesting comments, offering a few things to think about. On average, the readers who replied see "Linux" as the opposite of macOS or Windows, basically an anti something. Not because of its strengths, but because of the flaws they associate with its "competitors". They also focus entirely on the desktop world, which I can understand.

Many of them also confuse popularity with quality. The fact that other operating systems such as the BSDs or illumos are less widespread leads them to assume they are less "interesting". That is an ideological contradiction, because by the same logic Windows and macOS would be far superior to everything else simply because they dominate an enormous share of desktop systems.

@stefano Not good.
Only people who were teenage in 2010s would think that.
One who just discovered Ubuntu or was more webdev oriented.

It matches the disinterest on infra/sysadmin stuff of that specific era when all the junkie salesmen were pushing for azure, aws and other serverless BS...

And yes, Microsoft sucked and still sucks. The "right tool for the job" is a fallacy from people who would not really care, often FreeBSDsters :)

M$ is about coercion, never technical merit.

There's this quote from Theo de Raadt : “Linux people do what they do because they hate Microsoft. We do what we do because we love Unix.” I think it sums up pretty well why I prefer the BSD world.

@stefano
Windows owes its success to a questionable business practice called "bundling." It is possible to buy a computer without Windows, but it is not the norm. Many people are unaware that there is another option. Worse still, many believe that Windows is included with the PC (free of charge). But should we blame Microsoft? Microsoft is simply doing what the law allows. So popularity does not necessarily mean quality...

@stefano As it was for Linux for a long time and still for BSDs these days I think the best way to show off the quality is to stop playing catch up with big players and their heavier and heavier systems and focus on the alternative experience.

I would love a BSD desktop distribution which focuses on lean apps only.

Like Gemini-centered browser, text/markdown only e-mail/ messaging and the like. In the spirit of TUI but with GUI. I am adding this to my todo list 😅

@stefano How often do the "Best" products really win? Its more about who had the best marketing, or the most aggressive business practices.

@stefano The *perception* that #Linux is anti- #Windows or #MacOS was understandable back in the day when Steve Ballmer was running the show and #Microsoft pumped out no shortage of anti-Linux FUD and propaganda.

It's also important to note at that time the OS landscape was very different.

Oh, I had quite forgotten that stuff MS was putting out about Linux back then.
