Church leaders held meetings where children were told to forgive the man who sexually abused them and forget the abuse. An internal church document also suggests that, when appropriate, both parties be brought together for a discussion.

@ProPublica These abuse cases are becoming horrifically commonplace, that we react to nearly the same as school shootings. "We need to do something about this!" But the party of "freedom and family vaules" continues to lobby against children.

@ProPublica

The abuser can get all the prayers, absolution, and forgiveness they deserve from their prison cell.

Holding criminals responsible for their secular crimes does not impede their religious rights.

Render unto Washington what is Washington's and to God what is God's. If putting a rapist in jail stops God from being able to reach them, you have a pretty weak God.

@ProPublica Pretty standard for religion. It's all about power. Can't let people question the clergy. People might realize they are obeying men, not their imagined God. It could topple the whole house of cards that gives so much power and immunity to men who are just narcissists with a forged permission slip.

@ProPublica How about forgiving the creep as a Christian thing and also reporting the creep to the police as a civic-responsibility thing? Like the story about a guy beating a donkey that refuses to move. Some one says "you should reason with the donkey." Reply: "Let's see you get it to move." So, this second guy beats the donkey furiously, then whispers in its ear, and the donkey moves. "I thought you said to reason with it." "Yes, but first you have to get its attention."

They all belong in jail for a long time. I would like to take a baseball bat between their legs before they are locked up.

@ProPublica they can schedule all the meetings they want with the offender after they've served their prison sentence. Give unto Caesar, and get the hell out of the way of justice.

@ProPublica Churches continue to be churches, I see.

Every single time one of them notices an abuser it seems to be the same thing: take the victim aside, berate them for risking the abuser's soul, order them to either forgive or *apologize* to the abuser, repeat as needed.

(I'm still flabbergasted/depressed at how many religious collges/universities get away with having that kind of thing as official policy without having their doors kicked in by law enforcement.)
