Today I spent most of the day at the Meiji Jingu garden and Yoyogi Park. It is full of birds of different species, some more numerous than others.

Here’s a thread of the bird pics I took, starting with the star of the show, this gorgeous Kingfisher who posed for me for a while, as well as a crow whose call sounded like someone saying “ah ah” monotonously.

A long-billed crow perched on a thick tree branch, looking towards the distance, and seen from below. The background is a mix of green and white spots of the laves against the sky in the distance

The common kingfisher is now perched on a bamboo stick coming off the surface of a pond, which has some red leaves floating on the surface. The bird is rising on its feet, but they’re sunken into its feathers, so it looks just plopped on the bamboo

Next, and industrious Varied Tit which I spotted finding seeds and cracking them up by holding them with their feet while smashing them with their beaks (like crows) which was quite impressive for a lil birb. And also this Japanese White-eye, which I only spotted from from away (these photos are cropped from 600mm), and which are really cute!

And lastly for today, the ever-present in the garden Brown-Eared Gulgul, which has an interesting squeaky call and long (think 3-5s long) raspy group calls, as well as the cute, tiny, and hard to spot Ryukyu Minivet, which I only saw once the entire day (I’m sure I heard it more than once, but missed spotting it.)

The Ryukyu now hoped further up the branch, and is now looking upwards towards the canopy. The background is a blurry mix of browns, greens, and yellows

A Ryukyu Minivet, a small flycatcher-like bird with a white belly and black wings, tail, and head with a white mask, is seen perched on the branch of a tree. It is looking towards the camera with suspicion
