Lawmakers Want to Ban VPNs—And They Have No Idea What They're Doing

It's unfortunately no longer enough to force websites to check your government-issued ID before you can access certain content, because politicians have now discovered that people are using Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) to protect their privacy and bypass these invasive laws. Their solution? Entirely ban the use of VPNs.

Everyone appeases the supporters of social media bans for the young people, ignoring the "papers please, comrade" ID-checking they impose on the rest of us, needs to understand just how regressive this policy direction is.

Conservatives in the 1980s and 90s dreamed of having this kind of power to filter what kind of communications citizens can have with each other, and what kind of media we can access.
