Meanwhile, supporting the #EFF #rayhunter project was a blast as well. So many people left with the democratized threat hunting tooling.
Was so good to see people's brains light up over this.

Truly an amazing time at #DEFCON33 as we launched #TechReclaimers ! Thanks to the incomparable @thegibson and the entire family at #HackersTown , friends at #EFF and #CdC for the extra magic! Video of our presentation hopefully up soon enough ...
And now, to work!

🔐 A VPN can improve your privacy, or just give you a false sense of it. The EFF’s guide is a solid reminder that choosing a VPN is less about speed or price, and more about who runs it, what they log, and whether they actually deliver the protection they claim.
TL;DR
🧠 VPNs don’t guarantee anonymity
📜 “No logs” claims often lack proof
👤 Your threat model shapes your VPN needs
🔎 Look into ownership and reputation

For a VPN, mullvad is the most frequently recommended.
An independent US consumer review non-profit said mullvad, IVPN, and mozilla (which is resold mullvad) were best, made reasonable claims, and had independent audits.
After lastpass messed up a compromise my work did a comparison between 1password and bitwarden, then thought both were good and but went with 1password for it's enterprise options. The people who did the review thought bitwarden was good too though.
And browsers are a world of hurt because they're all too complicated and expensive to maintain.
to turn off the ai chat stuff in firefox.
go into about:config
click through the warning
search for browser.ml.chat.enabled and set it to false.
Also seriously install ublock origin. if you can find the ublock configuration page and turn on the annoyances filters that can kills a bunch of cookie banners too.
And because of ublock origin, firefox or one of its' descendants is probably your best available browser options.
remember that Creative Commons has fallen for NFT and shitcoin grifts before, when they let Filecoin bribe them into NFT land
https://davidgerard.co.uk/blockchain/2021/11/26/creative-commons-is-shilling-nfts/
and EFF was crawling up coiners' arses at the same time too, reminding us that these are Silicon Valley libertarian organisations that are extremely into the corporate funding
Oh, and the EFF leans the same way on "screw your creativity, big tech is right on GenAI".
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2023/04/how-we-think-about-copyright-and-ai-art-0
Which probably shouldn't be surprising given some of their previous "screw the humans, let's be absolutist" stances on other legal arguments.

So ... let me get this straight. You can't ban an obviously dangerous for-profit activity that's already killed someone. That we leave to "personal responsibility".
But you *can* ban kids from using social media? Rather than leaving them and their parents to exercise personal responsibility over whether and how they use it. You can also maintain a ban on recreational use of cannabis, despite no evidence of anyone dying from it in thousands of years of use.
(2/2)
Do not believe this " banning kids from social media" crap.
It's real-ID to use the Internet #authoritarian #fascist nonsense.
The fascists in power everywhere wan to do the #nazi "Papers Please"
Think through the tech implementation.
It's ID or no internet for EVERYONE!
