"The heavens have opened and out of the blue
Heralded, like a queen, across the night
The Northern Lights come marching into view"
- Cecil Day-Lewis

Red #aurora is quite rare and usually associated with intense solar activity. When charged particles react with less concentrated oxygen at greater altitudes (300-400 km/180-250 mi) it glows at higher wavelengths, creating red.

North-eastern #Iceland.

A colour photo of a dark sky full of stars. At the bottom is the silhouette of the ground surface, some low level lights are visible from distant objects. In the centre of the shot is a wavy line of bright aurora, the lower edge is strongly green and the upper parts are distinctly red. There are bars and lines within the bands of colour and, oddly, they aren't vertical.
