@Em0nM4stodon security is always the excuse, this is about control. Western governments and corporations are increasingly unpopular, and instead of trying to improve policies and behaviour they are turning to authoritarian control.
We need systems that fail well. What happens if the government is taken over by fascists? What happens if bad actors buy out the company? These problems now are so obvious that you have to be naive and ignorant to not see them.

@Em0nM4stodon The most unfortunate part of this as an American is that there are so many cases where you have a choice but its not a good one. Many employers are requiring extended verification that invade even more due to DPRK IT workers. This extends past employment on to things like password resets.

Facial recognition is everywhere and AI powered. More secure facilities are requiring this. Who knows who all is feeding this data where and how it is packaged and sold.

I know I have an employer who uses Equifax for employment verification. They can tell you every job I have ever had and how much money I made each year.. all the way back to when I sacked groceries after high school.

The issue is not one of personal decision, its of the fact that we need to make laws to prevent these abuses of the powerful.

People view is as crazy because this is happening everyday at every junction of life.
