Rural residents were upset when Oregon released a statewide map estimating property risk from wildfires.

Until then, the impacts of climate change were abstract to many people, one senator said. “This is a very big chicken coming home to roost.”

#Google themself don't care a thing about the garbage and #misinformation on their platform. https://social.coop/@smallcircles/114899129489765020

Witnessing the social dynamics on the cesspit that #Youtube is, is fascinating. Near nothing is genuine, everyone is hustling their channels.

Cool reaction vid? Wait until you see them react the 2nd time on that vid as if it was their 1st. Nice vid of people dancing on techno party, setting the crowd in motion? Staged. And your recommender will serve you more.

"A mere 0.1% of users share 80% of fake news. Twelve accounts – known as the “disinformation dozen” – created most of the vaccine misinformation on Facebook during the pandemic. These few hyperactive users produced enough content to create the false perceptions that many people were vaccine hesitant."

@crecente good that Mashable covered this in 2022... I feel like the situation has only worsened.

I came upon something by accident (because I quit it a long time ago) and I was shocked (SHOCKED I tell you!) about the rhetoric on Substack. Commenters show unabashed racism and homophobia... and there's dangerous misinformation around health stuff.

I reported some terrible, stomach-turning comments... and they are still up

@_elena

🧡 Thank you for doing your part in reporting unacceptable online content! That is more than most folks would do.

(I work for a NGO in the US. We prevent violence against adolescents. Online content causes harm in many ways.)

Hopefully Substack has taken appropriate action by now.

If not, there might be some other options for reporting the content. This guidance from the Let's STOP Hate Speech group, funded by the EU might be helpful:
