Got Shrimp

Here’s a moment where a laughing gull (Leucophaeus atricilla) swooped down and plucked a shrimp straight from the surf—mid-flight, mid-feast, mid-ceremony. And of course, a sanderling (Calidris alba) wandered into the frame, photobombing with perfect timing and coastal dignity.

I captured this scene on the beach at Gulfport, Mississippi.

Step into a world where even the smallest moments—like the glint in a bird's eye—tell their own story.

"A laughing gull launches into flight from the edge of a sandy shoreline, wings outstretched in a bold upward sweep. Its black-tipped wings slice the air with precision, while its white underbelly and slate-gray back shimmer against the muted tones of the surf. Clutched in its beak is a pale shrimp—its curved body and trailing legs visible midair, as if caught in a moment of mythic offering.

Behind the airborne gull, a small sanderling stands on the wet sand, near the water’s edge. Its compact body, pale plumage, and dark beak mark it as a quiet sentinel of the shore. The sanderling’s posture is still and observant, as if bearing witness to the gull’s ceremonial harvest from the receding tide.

Between them lies a dark piece of driftwood or debris, half-submerged in the surf—a relic of the tide’s retreat and a visual anchor in the composition. The water itself is textured with gentle ripples, lapping softly onto the sand. The scene is a study in contrast: motion and stillness, feast and observation, skyward ascent and grounded presence." - Microsoft Copilot
