Designer?

This is the video of Affinity announcing "Affinity is now free forever".

My 2 cents, Affinity (and their new owner, Canva) is about to eat Adobe's lunch.

Free for macOS and Windows. Coming to iPad in 2026.

@davemark citation needed.

Affinity’s suite was never as good at Adobe for real work. Even surprisingly basic shit you just couldn’t do in Affinity’s apps.

The fact that they’re giving it away for ‘free’, says all you need to know about how they value the product.

You know damned well what ‘free’ means in 2025.

Will more people use it? Yeah. Free is a hell of a drug.

Will it actually eat into adobe’s subscriptions? Probably not in any meaningful way.

@octothorpe “citation needed”? What, specifically were you looking for?

I do agree that Adobe products are best in class, but I have been burned by their subscription model in the past, enough so that I will never use another one of their products.

FYI, they explicitly promised that they would never use my art to feed their AI. Trust required, I get it. But the promise was made very publicly. If nothing else, I’m glad for the competition.

@davemark there is zero evidence that adobe’s subscription rates (ie, subscriber numbers) are going to change.

What was already a very inexpensive cross-platform product suddenly becoming free isn’t going to make any meaningful dent into Adobe’s numbers. They also have no answer for Lightroom, Premiere, After Effects, etc.

Adobe isn’t the leader because they managed to somehow lock everyone in. They managed to *stay* leading despite subscriptions because their product really is better.

@octothorpe Absolutely fair point. That said, I still think this will change the market, long term. Feel free to ding me on this in a year. I will certainly be following this with great interest.

@davemark @octothorpe Competition is healthy, obviously. And I understand why you avoid Adobe. But do you *really* see that many individuals, let alone businesses, abandoning very well-established workflows that Adobe has had decades to lock in? Come on.

@flargh @davemark @octothorpe Exactly. Inertia is a powerful force.
