* one size does not fit all
* there is no one true way
* anarchism is inherently messy
* we don't have all the answers.
#Anarchism is accepting that people must and should have freedom to self organise, and that some groups will choose to self-organise differently from others.
The things I want to protect against are things which give some people POWER OVER others, and heritable property is definitely one of those things.
@neonsnake The way I see the divide between the gift and the market economy is
* There's enough wealth to go round, if we share it;
* We need to support those who are unable to earn, anyway;
* Obsessively tracking flows of value is very inefficient -- it takes a lot of otherwise unnecessary work;
* Property and markets disentropise wealth, which you then need a taxation system to redistribute.
In other words, there's a lot of practical disadvantages to markets, for little obvious benefit.
@simon_brooke @neonsnake but the larger the # of people involved the more opportunities for exploitation arise, and eventually you end up with grifters and populists emerging.
I love the idea of anarchic systems but I fundamentally can’t see how they would actually work at the scale of the modern world, nor how one could transition to such a system.
Our views and experiences globally vary so much that assuming common ideals and objectives is a very unstable baseline to build on.
@dch You don't, in my opinion, do them at the scale of the modern world. You do them at the scale of the commune, or the co-operative, or the syndicate.
We're not going to have a 'modern world' for more than a couple of decades now, anyway, so we need to plan beyond it.
@neonsnake In other words, in a #Communist world, your job as a furniture importer probably just goes away. Is that a bad thing? You are entitled to a share of the collective wealth anyway, you just have to work less hard for it.
If you still want to work, you could make, with care and pride, good quality furniture, designed to last a lifetime. And because it's designed to last a lifetime, it doesn't have to be replaced every five years, so there's still less work to do.
