you benchmark your node/ruby/python software on your fancy new m4 mbp and celebrate 500ms response times.

I benchmark my rust software on a $30 potato computer that may as well have 256mb of RAM and celebrate 800ms response times.

we are not the same.

@zkat meanwhile I鈥檓 the weird cousin who writes in a Scheme that transpiles to C++ and gets the best of both worlds.

@zkat I test Java/Scala application on 10 year old potato from HP and celebrate 50ms response and massive throughput.

We are not the same.

@jarekrozanski here's rust (port 4000) and raw nginx (port 80) under 1000 concurrent client contention, serving a plain static file over a LAN on my potato. I don't believe you actually have as much of a potato as you say.

@zkat WDYM 500ms and 800ms???

Back in 2003 my target was 400ms with PHP4... on Windows on a Pentium II that ran at 400 MHz with 64 MB of RAM.

Same target with Node.js SSR in 2013.

I'm not sure what happened after but here we are.

@emilis I mean a server that's slammed with thousands of concurrent clients maxing out its resources and then some. For smaller blasts, it's like 50ms.

and don't get me started with people testing their massive React SPAs on their iPhone 17 Pros and literally nothing else.
