TIL that the reason why several different Japanese sellers on eBay often have identical listings of the same object is because they're copying auctions off of Yahoo Japan. They obviously don't have the item in hand and will try to get it after you buy it from them, so you might not get what you were expecting and it might take a very long time.

@gabrielesvelto oh god, I guess that's a reason to use proxy services instead, they're at least honest about it and transparent in their markup… we've used FromJapan but from what we understand their prices are high

Incidentally, has anyone used this to buy stuff?

https://www.jauce.com/

Is it trustworthy? Do they charge a lot?

I don't know jauce, but I've used
https://buyee.jp/
to buy lens for my camera (from MapCamera - they are using buyee).
The costs are described, everything was really fast and smooth. I was genuinely impressed by the quality and speed of the service (and costs were IMO OK).

@eugen @gabrielesvelto Yeah, buyee is pretty reliable, although the fees can be a bit steep occasionally. (because international shipping and the effort of potentially re-packing the items to survive said international shipping isn't particularly cheap) so I wouldn't use it for cheap stuff unless you're buying quite a lot at once. (I once spent ¥2000 (~$20 USD) on a DSi, and the fees+international shipping was almost double what I paid for it... Wanted a Japanese model though, so worth it to me)

IIRC they're even an official partner of yahoo auctions at this point? In that the "official" English listing page is buyee.
