Advocates say some tactics used by officers to target Latinos in Trump’s deportation effort draw from Joe Arpaio’s playbook.

“The model was Maricopa County — the very public, very humiliating, demoralizing approach to the raids, and the cruelty.”

This County Was the “Model” for Local Police Carrying Out Immigration Raids. It Ended in Civil Rights Violations.

Under Sheriff Joe Arpaio, Maricopa County was one of the first testing grounds for ICE’s 287(g) program, which lets local police enforce immigration laws. Many Arizonans say those abuses parallel what’s playing out now under Trump.

Arizona police agencies are largely rejecting an ICE program that lets officers act as deportation agents, citing the experience of the state’s largest sheriff’s office where the program ended after a federal judge found civil rights violations.

Arizona Police Agencies Were Once at the Forefront of Local Immigration Enforcement. Now Most Are Avoiding It.

In January, the Trump administration launched a national recruitment campaign to deploy local officers as deportation agents. It has added more than 900 agencies, but only four in Arizona have signed on.

@ProPublica The legacy of joe arpaio lives on. I never trust AZ sheriffs especially since I almost always see them on isolated stretches of county roads. Who knows when one will shoot me simply bc he can.
