Well, that’s a first.
Signal apparently depends from Amazon Web Services, which is currently down.

@aral Try a fork called "Molly" from molly.im This one should be working fine.
@MartinaNeumayer Afaik, they use the same network (and I don’t use Android) but thanks for the heads up :)
@aral By default yes, but there is an option in settings to change it as the user wish. Molly is a FOSS type of fork without all the proprietary trash included, like google services, closed blobs etc. The only one "downside" is the need to set up some external notifications service, because of the lack of google's. But that's not some hard thing to do. There are plenty of such, and much more privacy friendly, actually available. For other systems there are also foss variants of original Signal.
@MartinaNeumayer I’ll definitely take a closer look at it, thanks Martina :)
@aral You're welcome. This option should be somewhere under "censorship bypass". As my hubby told me already. I don't use Signal myself, but he is and said that Molly is working well, as he checked today morning. So, looks like they are able to use different backends from only the aws ones.
@aral by complete coincidence I installed my own #MatrixChat server at the weekend. Decentralisation- don't you just love it?
@aral AWS has an outage which is affecting a lot of other services:

@aral it's because of the current AWS outage, but it also means @signalapp should go for a more distributed architecture.
@aral That explains the constant 'You May Have New Messages'
