I fully plan to have one ear in each of my simultaneous conferences today, #LCF2025 and the #fediforum.
Something amazing about social networking, these streams have already crossed in the first hour of LCF, before #fediforum even opened. The “Kitchen Ceilidh” morning plenary already chatted about the importance of having local social media which supports, rather than competes with, real-world community networking.
Everywhere I go, we need FOSS networking platforms. We just don’t know it!
OMG and the wrap-up comment in this plenary, while the topic was sustainability work, is so relevant to #fediforum as well! Speaker from the HRM noted that we need to normalize sustainability meaning maintenance, adaptation, and ongoing work.
She pointed out that when a road develops a pothole, nobody says “well that’s it, roads have failed, we’re never building one again.” You invest in repair and ongoing improvement.
Yet with sustainability work, like shore protection or flood control or greener building (and with #fedi! With social networks !) one less than perfect result leads to NIMBY reaction and condemnation of an entire effort. 😬
