"AI advocates have warned that if every author in the class action filed a claim, it would "financially ruin" the entire industry."

Win win.
I just registered my name & book details with the appropriate law firm.

Check if your book/article/paper is on the list here:

If it is, go here:

@cstross @Richard_Littler I have rrad elsewhere that the damages would be too great if settled individually, not in a class action, the outcome of which is likely to be far less than the damages owed, and will allow OpenAI to continue functioning.

I have see people suggest it is better to lodge a separate lawsuit with your own damages payable.

I'm not a lawyer, but I do want to see OpenAI pay appropriately for what they took, and not get to hand wave it away in a class action settlement.

Industry coerces lawmakers/courts into magically voiding their liability in 3...2...1...

@cavyherd @Richard_Littler Aksherly, Anthropic AI *already caved*—they admitted liability, it's not going to trial, what's happening now is wrangling over the size of damages and who is involved in the settlement.

(Of course, this now means the weight of scrutiny will fall on OpenAI, Meta, and other thieves—with an unfavourable precedent, too …)

@cstross @cavyherd @Richard_Littler If pressed, I will reluctantly settle for the paltry sum of ten million American dollars. Probably. Unless I'm in a mood.

Oh that's lovely! Doesn't obviate the possibility of a more aggressive response, but that is a lovely outcome!
