That’s when I realised that the word ‘REAR’ was lit and therefore this must be a clickable button. Indeed it was.

The two icons above the control dial turned out to also be buttons you can press.

This is terrible user interface design. There was nothing on the word ‘REAR’ to indicate that it was clickable. No depression to feel, no underlining or other symbol that might indicate that you could click it.

Also, it doesn’t really depress when you press it, so it doesn’t have the feel of a control you could click.

Wonder what the folks at @atpfm would make of this?

In defense of the rest of the Cupra, it does have more physical controls than our Skoda Enyaq and it also ensures that the CarPlay display doesn’t fill up the entirity of the screen. It reserves an area above and below the CarPlay functionality to quickly let you access the car’s own settings.

Image of Cupra driver’s view (for a left-hand drive model) showing Apple CarPlay display on main screen which is flanked (top and bottom) by other car controls (e.g. climate controls) that are part of the screen.

Despite the positives having to look at a control panel on the door to work out whether you are activating the front or rear windows feels bad design (and potentially dangerous).
