Toyota’s sales and production fell in November, weighed down in large part by a sharp drop in China as the country discontinues subsidies meant to boost the sales of electric and fuel-efficient cars. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/business/2025/12/25/companies/toyota-sales-drop-november/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #business #companies #toyota #cars #carmakers #china
From buying glass breakers to opting for new cars, Tesla owners are having to go to great lengths to deal with a problem most had never imagined: being unable to open malfunctioning doors in the electric vehicle. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/business/2025/12/24/companies/tesla-malfunctioning-door-handles/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #business #companies #tesla #children #cars #electricvehicles #carmakers
You know congestion pricing has worked just as advertised, when even @politico can't find some controversy to concoct.
And yes, e.g. "the New York City Economic Development Corp. found foot traffic inside the central business district was up 4.8 percent compared to only 1 percent for business districts elsewhere in the city."¹
Spotted in Houston: two hacked variable message signs. That the signs were placed on the sidewalk, blocking pedestrian access, makes the messages all the more urgent.
@cstross I've not driven stick shift since I bought my current car which, being electric, has only a selector knob for Forward, Reverse, Neutral and Park. But before that I was driving up to 50k miles a year, and it wouldn't surprise me if I have covered half a million miles in a manual
From perusing owners's manuals ahead of renting my first electric vehicle (which alas devolved into renting a plug-in hybrid) it appears that some electric vehicles have dropped 'Park' entirely from the knob, and just have R/N/D.
It's not clear whether this means that their automatic gearboxes no longer have a parking lock, or this has become a thing that is no longer under direct driver control (like the parking brake and the choke).

Got smol mild #steel service trolley, so I don't have to keep going back and forth for multiple #toolboxes and other stuff when working on #cars or other general #maintenance - lined each tray and added reflective tape on corners and LED lights for safety when I am out in the yard in the dark - there are many random vehicles arriving for the repair garage next door at all hours, and their drivers are often stressed and distracted (one even forgot his doggo when collecting a car and had to come back for it!) #DIY #maker
Why don't politicians see the problems that over-dependence on cars causes for Britain (and England particularly)?
Because in London, where they spend much of their time such a problem has been addressed by massive expenditure on public transport... only in London can the majority of the population conduct their lives without owning a car.
As so often the Westminster Village's political myopia pushes social costs onto the regions!
