Starting to think Bluesky’s ATProtocol got a few things right that Mastodon and ActivityPub might have missed. Have a look at the “Why not use ActivityPub?” section in the ATProto FAQs. I think they make some compelling points. Is ATProto actually the better protocol for its intended purpose? #fediverse #atproto #bluesky #activitypub #mastodonhttps://atproto.com/guides/faq#why-not-use-activity-pub

...and an equally good case for extending AP, as FEPs do. BS could have done this to get where they wanted to go, eg by using FEPs adapted from Zot for portable ID.

Also a good case for dancing thrice widdershins around the W3C to get an official update of the spec. BS could have massively speeded up getting this done, especially when they still had support from Titter.

Sure. If the purpose is to speedrun the history of Titter; stand up a feature-parity replacement quickly, get bought by dodgy capitalists quickly, enshittify quickly.

If the purpose is to be part of a long term social web ecosystem that continually redistributes power to the edges, then no. WordPress, with their network effect, could have made up a vanity protocol too. But they didn't. Same with Discourse.

Broadly, yes. This is best analysis I've seen so far of the commonalities and differences between ATProto and AP is from Christine of Spritely;

Along with the response by Bryan Newbold of BlueSky;

... And Christine's response to that;

Do you have specific questions, or were you just curious?
