A patient at UC San Diego received a letter threatening to have their care discontinued if they continued to request staff wear N95s.

The letter calls this behaviour “disruptive”

Covid isn’t over. An N95 is one of the best ways to protect yourself.

It’s not disruptive to fight for your health.

Letter from UC San Diego. Patient details are redacted. Text reads Health and your doctor are committed to providing a healthy and safe environment for our patients, staff, and physicians. Disruptive, abusive, and/or threatening behavior negatively impacts our ability to maintain the therapeutic environment that is so important to both patient and staff well-being. The purpose of this letter is to provide you with written notification of our concerns with reports we've recently received about your behavior during visits at with your provider, support staff, and Practice Manager. Specifically, we received reports that on 5/16/2025, 5/15/2025, 4/22/2025, 4/15/2025, 3/27/2025, 3/25/2025, 3/20/2025 you repeatedly requested that staff wear N95 masks prior to your arrival and during your appointment. On 5/16/2025 you were informed that although we cannot guarantee that staff will be masked before your arrival we are accommodating and would wear a mask if asked. Our policy is to mask when requested but a requirement of N95 masking is outside of our policy. Your recent behavior is not acceptable and a violation of UCSD Health's policies. Please note that continued disruptive behavior may result in further action up to and including discontinuation of your healthcare at UC San Diego Health and its affiliated clinics. Moving forward, we expect that you will be courteous and respectful to the staff, providers, and patients in our clinic. If you are unsatisfied with UCSDH's method

It’s things like this that dissuade patients from complaining about bad behaviour in healthcare.

Retaliation is real. You can be “fired” as a patient. Labelled difficult or non complaint. Have your care directly reduced.

We need to reform the complaints process so it actually protects patients:
