@L1vY@mstdn.social @earthlingusa challenge coins are often given out amongst agencies and (military) units.

Traditionally, they were used to “proof” membership of a specific unit when “challenged”, and given often only for exceptional accomplishments.

Nowadays they’ve devaluated to “participation trophies” in most—though definitely not all—cases.
