U.S. CITIZENS ABROAD & CITIZENS IN THE US:
Please contact your state Senators like I just did and tell them NOT TO PASS the SAVE Act (H.R. 22).
IT ALREADY PASSED THE HOUSE!
This is clearly voter suppression.
If it passes the Senate, U.S. citizens may have to show not just a driver’s license, but ADDITIONAL proof of citizenship to vote (including a certified U.S. birth certificate, or a current U.S. Passport, or a Consular Report of Birth Abroad or a Report of Birth of a U.S. citizen issued by the Secretary of State, or a Naturalization Certificate or Certificate of Citizenship issued by the Secretary of Homeland Security).
Imagine what kind of chaos that would cause on Election Day in districts where polling stations are few, with voting officials, or even ICE holding up the line, causing a scene, checking your papers before you can get a ballot, telling you there’s something wrong with your documents, delaying the voting process so others don’t get a chance. Know that this is part of the plan.
If you’re married, an adoptee or someone who changed your name, I genuinely hope your current name is the same on all those documents. If it’s not, this bill will mess things up for you.
For those of us overseas, if the SAVE Act passes the Senate, depending on the laws of our home states, we could lose our right to vote in our home state elections! (Some states require proof of active residency. Should you qualify to vote as a U.S. citizen but not as a resident of your state, the proposal is for your vote to be counted under the District of Columbia (D.C.). Are you from D.C.? Are you a resident of D.C.? If not and you still have ties to your home community, let your Senators know A.S.A.P.!)
