@pete asks:
I've a riding buddy who won't join us if any proposed route has more than a few steps of hike-a-bike. Perhaps relating to off-road riding more than other cycling disciplines, but..
Q7. Do you draw a line as to how much pushing/carrying is acceptable on a bike ride?

No, but I'm reasonably fit and able bodied (ignoring the arthritis and fibromyalgia).
I've done stuff that I've deeply regretted where I've gone wrong and had to push a bike through thick heather on a peat moorland for several miles, and last year where a shortcut involved having to push our touring bikes for 5 hours over a hill (turns out it was only suitable for MTBs). My friend says I'm no longer allowed to choose routes.
