Hey #GameDev #Animation #VFX
Are you working on a Free game (100% non-commercial, open source, etc) or a CC cartoon feature of any length, or a live video movie or show, and need some 3D graphics, ideally Blender-based, support? I might be your #FreeAsInSpeech part time collaborator/problem solver.
What I am not: a visual artist. So if you are hoping to get some really wicket upgraded beast models for your game, I am not your guy. Textures, I might be able to help you with, depending on how good you or your people are to begin with - I have spent significant time on surfacing applications/Plugins.
What I am: an accidental semi-expert at @Blender thanks to having worked IT, and later #Python dev, at a studio that also used Blender. When they offered me the chance to jump over to developing Blender Plugins, I chose to invest a lot of time learning all the Blender functions (and therefore, 3D work more generally) naively, as a front end user, first. I did not become expert, I just learned exactly what the program is doing at each step, sufficient to be able to automate it for the real artists, cutting hundreds of hours of drugerous repetitive labour and render hours. I understand the data structures of a .blend file, deeply.
My ulterior motive in offering free help to strictly non-commercial projects is as follows:
As you'll see in my pinned toots, I have written a Weird Al-style album of songs inspired by driving a school bus, which I plan to record this winter, and ideally, make an absurd self-produced video or two, which I will need to get my Blender chops up a bit in order to execute.
It has been too long now to seek out commercial work off the bat, because I need the freedom to refresh my memory of things, and not face deadlines that compete with real life.
But if you are toiling away at a passion project where some form of visual tech can help you, whether it's inserting virtual objects into a real scene, motion graphics, editing, compositing, animating, but especially scripting of repetitive procedures, where you can describe a sequence of UI actions you are forced to take, over and over again, and what the changing variables are.
Oh, and I can also do Audio - foley, music, what have you. But I'm specifically looking to do some Free Blender work, to get my chops back up, this winter.
If you're working in #godot I'm especially keen to join your team, and hopefully soak up a bit of your knowledge as well.
