In the early 1800s, Surinamese artist Gerrit Schouten created a large collection of dioramas called “Paramaribo and the Plantation.” They depict life in Suriname, Africa, notably on plantations.
They’re small, intricate, and made from painted papier-mâché. Behind them are painted backdrops, not unlike what were used in animations.
