May Ziyade. She is my idol and reason for half of what I do. I love how she was first and foremost a literati and part of why I got into Arabic poetry and learning oud is because her mother memorized hundreds of Arabic poetry and she always found comfort in the oud.

I'm going to talk about the sahiqat (صاحقات) genre. In the pre-modern #Arab world this was the genre of sapphic or lesbian stories. It was regarded as the purest form of love because of how impossible it was.

Different than Western sapphic love stories, it re-affirmed their devotion to God. For example the most famous couple are al-Zarqa and Hind bint al-Nu'man.

@bookstodon The Nightingale is an important motif in both #Arab and #Persian music and poetry because it is a bird that only sings for its true love and will not sing no matter how much people beg.

The song is interesting because it shows a male singer begging for the nightingale to sing to him, but there is no response.

It is also a symbol of freedom throughout the Arab World. Just as you cannot force the Nightingale to sing, you cannot force the will of another person.

Tagging my girl @ljwrites for this b/c like her, I don't think I write completely unique things, but it can come off as unique to the modern reader.

I also write #historicalfiction, but even my #sff employs the same philogical methodology that #Tolkien does. For example, my MC in my vampire novel does not fully understand the language of the world she's in.

I also base a lot of my worlds on medieval #Arab #CentralAsian and #Chinese societies.
